How Can Mica Be Adapted and Used for Various Applications?

Mica is a very versatile and flexible material. Due to specific electrical, physical, and thermal properties, it makes for an ideal insulation material. Thanks to mica’s versatility, it can be applied used in different applications through cutting, shaping, and combining with other substances to create unique insulation solutions. 

There are 3 ways in which mica is usually adapted for use in various applications.



Shaped Mica

Mica has high tensile strength and is formed in thin sheets, which can easily be cut and shaped. Techniques such as milling, laser cutting, and clicker pressing allow mica to be produced in large quantities in precise shapes and exact measurements. Shaped mica products are used in high voltage transformers and switchgear applications in bulk. In addition, pure mica can withstand up to 2000kV per mm, making it ideal for high voltage applications. 

Shaped mica is becoming increasingly popular in the automotive industry. The widespread movement towards electric vehicles is forcing innovation in battery technology. Mica shields are used in automotive industries to provide insulation that slows the process of thermal runaway. 

Rolled Mica

Mica has great thermal properties. Pure phlogopite mica can withstand up to 1,000 C, but it also bonds with other insulating materials to form a stronger and more effective insulation material. In rolled mica, mica is combined into a laminate with another insulating material and produced in rolls. It can be 0.4mm to 3.3mm thick. Mica is usually combined with glass fabrics, glass tissue, silicone, and Calcium Magnesium Silicate to increase the material's temperature. 

This kind of product is usually used in induction furnaces. It is extremely easy to install due to its thin and flexible structure. In addition, due to its thermal properties and durability, it helps extend the life of the furnace lining. 


Rigid Mica and Formed Components

Mica is a flexible material, but it also has high tensile, elastic tenacity, and compressive strength.  This means it is durable, strong, and provides structural and insulating support. It also means that mica can easily be incorporated into rigid forms and applications. 

Mica tubes are used in various appliances, like hair dryers, air blowers, and heat guns. It acts as an insulation sleeve and protects the core heating elements. Additionally, its superior electrical and thermal insulation can be used in larger electrical motors as well as smelt furnaces. 



Mica sheets are shaped around a form and function in the same ways as tubes. Both rigid mica tubes and mica sheets are specifically manufactured to be waterproof, which means they can withstand the elements and keep their insulation properties for a longer duration.
