How Is Mica Insulation Used in High Voltage Insulation Application?

Mica is preferred over other insulation materials for high voltage insulation in a diverse range of industries for its exceptional physical capabilities. The key properties that make it ideal to use as high voltage insulation are exceptional thermal stability and high dielectric strength. It can withstand up to 2000 kilovolts per mm before breaking down, and pure mica is stable up to the temperature of 900 degrees C, whereas when combined with other materials, it can withstand the temperature up to 1600 C. High thermal stability is essential because high voltage can break the insulation material putting the safety of others at risk.

Here are the three most common uses of mica in high voltage insulation applications:

Electric vehicles

The electric vehicle manufacturing industry uses mica-based insulation products for the insulation of the high voltage electric batteries and other electrical components to ensure the safety of users against the electric circuits. Mica insulation is used to insulate a range of EV components, including chassis, charging components, and battery compartment, in order to improve the safety of the user and to ensure that vehicles meet vital safety requirements and standards.

High voltage wire insulation

Mica cable tapes are used for the insulation of high voltage wires. High-voltage cables are used for electric power transmission at high voltage in various applications. They need to be fully insulated for safe operations. Mica cable tapes act as insulation.

High voltage capacitors

High voltage capacitors are also made of the mica material. They provide reliability and stability to a circuit and ensure the circuit is best suited to high-frequency applications and situations and enable high precision performance.

So these are the three main high-voltage insulation applications of mica products.
